Buc-ee’s Says it will Prioritize Free Enterprise States Throughout Expansion

Buc-ee's has earned a reputation as one of the fastest-growing travel center brands in America. Known for its large stores, clean restrooms, and devoted customer base, the Texas-based company has rapidly expanded across the nation.

Recently, the company made headlines for a different reason. CEO Arch Aplin III announced that Buc-ee's will prioritize expansion in "conservative, business-friendly" states, arguing that those locations are more welcoming to investment and growth.

For many businesses, the choice about whether to expand is based on a small number of practical considerations, such as taxes, regulations, the availability of workers, the state of the infrastructure, and the general attitude shown towards free enterprise.

Right now, almost two thirds of Buc-ee’s footprint is located in deep-red Texas. In 2026, Forbes ranked North Carolina, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Florida as the top states for business. Buc-ee’s has locations or upcoming expansions in each of those states along with new locations in other high-ranking states like Arizona and Nebraska.

How do states land among Forbes best states for business? One common characteristic: many of these states have enjoyed conservative leaderships with a focus on economic development, lower taxes, and streamlined permitting procedures. Such circumstances prompt entrepreneurs to take risks, expand, hire workers, and invest in their local communities.

Independent businesses grapple with each of these challenges. Since operating costs are lower and regulatory obstacles are fewer in Forbes’ “best states,” independent businesses will often find it easier to compete and grow.

Across America, independent businesses are the primary source of new jobs, which is why it's important to have a sound business environment. Businesses will naturally gravitate towards places which actively promote free enterprise and a pro-growth environment.

Buc-ee's attitude ultimately reflects a straightforward business principle: companies put their money where they feel at home and believe they can succeed.

Whether it's a national brand opening new locations or a local entrepreneur launching a first venture, a supportive business environment can make the difference between surviving and thriving.
